The Sentiero dei Gufi — Trail of the Owls — is a gentle invitation to step into the green heart of the Val di Susa, where mixed woodlands of oaks, chestnuts and conifers create an atmosphere that feels almost enchanted. This well-marked loop trail unfolds around the town of Susa with a modest elevation gain, making it a wonderful choice for families, beginner hikers or anyone simply longing for a quiet escape into nature. The trail takes its name from the owls that inhabit these woods, yet the wildlife here is wonderfully diverse: woodpeckers, jays, roe deer and, for the patient and silent observer, the unmistakable silhouette of a tawny owl perched among the branches. Wildflowers and resinous scents mark the spring awakening, while autumn drapes the forest in warm shades of amber and rust. This is a route that rewards slowness — deep breaths, unhurried steps and a curious gaze. Dogs on a leash are welcome, and the full loop takes around three hours to complete comfortably. Spring and autumn are the finest seasons to walk here, when the light filters softly through the canopy and the forest feels most alive.
