The Ancient Vineyards Trail is a journey through time winding among the centuries-old terraces of Stroppo, deep in the unspoiled Val Maira. Walking these stone paths, you can almost feel the presence of the farmers who for generations shaped the steep valley slopes into masterpieces of agricultural ingenuity, crafting the famous vine-covered terraces by hand. This circular route, taking around four and a half hours, meanders past lichen-draped dry-stone walls, quiet hamlets, and sweeping views toward the Occitan peaks of the Maritime Alps. Spring brings meadows bursting with wildflowers and the fragrance of mountain herbs, while autumn transforms the vineyards into a blaze of red and gold, offering scenery of extraordinary beauty. Rated E by the Italian Alpine Club, the trail is well suited to families with older children and hikers looking to combine gentle exercise with cultural discovery and stunning landscapes. Dogs are welcome on a lead, making this a perfect outing for four-legged companions too. Spring and autumn are the ideal seasons to experience this path at its most evocative, away from the crowds and close to the authentic soul of the Piedmontese Alps.
