Hiking to Colle Chaberton means embarking on a journey that weaves together the raw beauty of the Cottian Alps and the quiet echoes of history. Starting from Claviere, a charming mountain village on the French border, the trail winds through open meadows, ancient scree fields and breezy ridges that reward every step with ever-wider views across the surrounding peaks. As altitude builds, the panorama opens to reveal iconic summits like Monviso and the Franco-Italian ranges under vast alpine skies. In summer, the slopes come alive with gentians, rhododendrons and alpine poppies, while marmots pop up curiously from the rocks and eagles glide silently on the high thermals. The destination is Fort Chaberton, long considered the highest fortress in Europe, whose austere ruins tell stories of war and human ingenuity against a backdrop of breathtaking scenery. Graded E on the Italian CAI scale and taking around five hours, the route suits families with older children as well as seasoned hikers. Dogs are welcome on the trail. The best time to visit runs from June through September, when paths are safe and the mountain landscape is at its most vibrant and rewarding.
