Sometimes a few kilometres are enough to contain an entire world. The Verde Azzurro Trail between Monterosso al Mare and Vernazza is one of those paths measured not in distance but in wonder: every bend reveals a new perspective over the Mediterranean, every terraced vineyard and olive grove tells centuries of toil and breathtaking beauty woven together. You set off from the largest of the Cinque Terre villages, with its seafront promenade and crystal-clear waters, and immediately enter a steep, dramatic landscape where the coastline plunges toward the sea with almost fierce energy. The trail winds through dry-stone walls, the scent of Mediterranean scrub, and the distant murmur of waves below. The difficulty is moderate — rated E, suitable for those with a reasonable level of fitness but no technical climbing experience required — and within an hour and a half you arrive in Vernazza, one of the most celebrated villages in Italy, its medieval tower standing guard over a colourful little harbour. A short but deeply rewarding hike, best walked slowly, ideally at dawn or dusk when the slanted light turns every glimpse of coastline into something close to a painting.
