Lake Maggiore or Lake Como? Which to Choose for a Weekend

Which of the two lakes to choose — and when to prefer Garda — for a weekend from Milan

Lake Maggiore and Lake Como are less than an hour from Milan and are similar — both surrounded by the Alps, both with historic villas and exceptional botanical gardens. But they have distinct characters. Maggiore is wider (212 km²), more romantic, with the Borromean Islands and Villa Taranto. Como is more intimate (146 km², Italy's deepest at 410m), more elegant, with Bellagio and Villa Carlotta. Which to choose depends on the type of trip. Third option: Lake Garda (370 km², the largest, most popular and least exclusive — better for families with children and water sports).

Lake Maggiore: Borromean Islands and Villa Taranto

Stresa (train from Milan Centrale 1h, €8.50) is Lake Maggiore's base. The Borromean Islands (cumulative ferry €18 for 3 islands): Isola Bella (17th-century Borromeo Baroque palace with Italian terraced gardens, €22 with palace), Isola Madre (the largest, botanical gardens with free parrots and a four-century palace, €15), Isola dei Pescatori (the authentic fishing village, no ticket, just restaurants). Villa Taranto (Verbania Pallanza, ferry from Stresa 15 min, €9, open April-October) has 20,000 plant species — the April-May flowering (azaleas, rhododendrons, tulips) is one of northern Italy's most spectacular. Mottarone Funicular (from Stresa, €13 return, view over seven lakes) and Laveno Mombello (Lombard shore, car ferry from Intra, €9).

Lake Como: Bellagio, Varenna and Villa Carlotta

Como (train from Milan 40 min, €5.50) → steamer to Bellagio (1h, €7.50) or direct train to Varenna (55 min, €7.30). Bellagio is the lake's most beautiful village — the ascents (Salita Serbelloni and Salita Mella) with silk shops and gardens, Villa Serbelloni (gardens by reservation only, €10). Varenna (eastern shore, less crowded than Bellagio) has Villa Monastero (€7, former Cistercian monastery with lakeside terrace), Castello di Vezio (€4, 15 min on foot, birds of prey) and the Passeggiata degli Innamorati. Villa Carlotta (Tremezzo, ferry from Bellagio 15 min, €13) — the lake's main visit: 70,000 sqm of botanical gardens with 600 varieties of rhododendrons and azaleas, Canova sculptures. The Navigazione Laghi daily ticket (€18.50) includes all steamers.
