Matera in two days allows visiting the Sassi in depth, doing the Crypt of Original Sin and a trip to the Murgia Park or Maratea. The world's oldest city with continuous settlement (10,000 years) was until 1952 the symbol of southern Italian poverty — then forcibly evacuated, then rediscovered by UNESCO (1993) and international tourism after the 2019 European Capital of Culture. Same cave, three eras: medieval latrine → 1950 poor dwelling → 2019 design hotel. From Naples: 2h 30' by car. From Bari: 1h 30' by car (65km). No direct train.
Day 1 — The Sassi and the Rock-Hewn Churches
Sasso Caveoso (the most scenic, on the ravine side) and Sasso Barisano (the most frequented, with restaurants and hotels) are walked on foot. Main rock-hewn churches: Santa Maria de Idris (inside the rock above Sasso Caveoso, 13th-century frescoes, €3), San Pietro Caveoso (on the promontory in front of Sasso Caveoso, free externally), Santa Lucia alle Malve (€3, picturesque 11th-century frescoes). MUSMA (Museum of Contemporary Sculpture, €5, Palazzo Pomarici) is one of southern Italy's most original contemporary art museums. The view from the Via Buozzi belvedere (free) over Sasso Caveoso and the ravine is Matera's most photographed. The gravina (the canyon separating the city from the Murgia) is crossed on foot to see the Sassi from outside — 45 min from the centre.
Day 2 — Crypt of Original Sin and Maratea
The Crypt of Original Sin (18km from Matera, Picciano, mandatory booking at least 48h in advance, €15 with guide) is the 'Sistine Chapel of cave art' — 8th-9th century frescoes in a limestone cave discovered in 1963, with angels, saints and biblical scenes that have preserved their original colours for 1,200 years. Guided visits only at fixed times (morning and afternoon). Maratea (120km, 1h 30' by car) is the Lucanian Tyrrhenian jewel — 32km of cliffs almost without beach clubs. The Cristo Redentore (22m, Monte San Biagio) dominates the gulf. Pollino Park (Basilicata-Calabria border) with millennial pino loricato trees and the Raganello canyon completes the Lucanian week.
