Best Day Trips from Milan: Lake Como, Bergamo, Lake Maggiore and Pavia

Milan as a hub — the best destinations reachable in less than 2 hours by train or car

11 min read · Spring · Summer · Autumn · Updated 17 May 2026

Milan is northern Italy's best hub for day trips — within a 2-hour radius by train or car you reach three of Europe's most beautiful lakes, the Alps, Venice, the Ligurian Riviera, the Langhe and some of Europe's most important medieval cities. The Lombard rail network (Trenord) is dense and convenient — most destinations cost €5-15 by train from Milano Centrale or Milano Porta Garibaldi. In this guide: the 6 best day trips for experience quality, accessibility and value for money. All feasible in a day leaving early morning and returning in the evening. The Frecciarossa adds destinations like Venice (2h 30', €25-50), Verona (1h 05', €15-35) and Florence (1h 45', €25-55) — further away but accessible in a day.

Lake Como and Lake Maggiore

Lake Como: train from Milan Centrale to Como San Giovanni (40 min, €5.50) + steamer to Bellagio (1h, €7.50) or Varenna (direct train, 55 min, €7.30 — more convenient). Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo (€13, azaleas April-May) is the most complete visit on the western shore. The Navigazione Laghi daily ticket (€18.50) includes all steamers. Lake Maggiore: train from Milan Centrale to Stresa (1h, €8.50). The Borromean Islands (combined ferry €18, Isola Bella + Isola Madre + Isola dei Pescatori) are the main visit. Villa Taranto in Verbania (ferry from Stresa 15 min, €9, open April-October) has northern Italy's most spectacular botanical gardens — 20,000 plant species. Which lake to choose: Como for elegance and Bellagio, Maggiore for botanical gardens and Borromean Islands. Both are better in April-May or September.

Bergamo, Certosa di Pavia and Mantua

Bergamo Alta (train from Milan Centrale 50 min, €5.40 + funicular €1.30): Piazza Vecchia (Lombardy's most beautiful), Cappella Colleoni (Giovanni Antonio Amadeo, 1476, the city's Renaissance masterpiece), the UNESCO Venetian Walls (walkable in 1h). Certosa di Pavia (train from Milan to Pavia 25 min, €3.50 + bus 3km, 20 min): the 15th-century Carthusian monastery commissioned by the Visconti — the white Carrara marble facade is among the most elaborate of the Italian Renaissance, the interior has frescoes by Bergognone, the great cloister with 122 arches is one of Italy's most beautiful courtyards. Free entry, donation recommended. Mantua (train from Milan 1h 45', €10): the Gonzaga Ducal Palace (€13 — 500 rooms, among Europe's largest museum complexes, including Mantegna's Camera degli Sposi 1465-1474, the illusionistic trompe-l'oeil frescoes Michelangelo studied before the Sistine) and Palazzo Te (€15, Giulio Romano, 1524-1534).

Venice and Verona in a Day

Venice in a day from Milan (train 2h 30', €25-50, from Milano Centrale every 30 min with Frecce) is feasible leaving at 7:00 and returning at 21:00 — 10 hours in the city. Priorities: Piazza San Marco and the Basilica (before 9:00, without queuing), Palazzo Ducale (€25, book online), a gondola ride (€80 for 30 min, do it in the evening), cicchetti in Cannaregio (from 18:00). It is not enough to see everything — but sufficient to understand why Venice is unique. Verona in a day (train 1h 05', €15-35): the Arena (€10), Casa di Giulietta (€6), Piazza delle Erbe, Torre dei Lamberti (€6), Castelvecchio (€6). With the Verona Card (€20, 24h) you save money. Recommended addition: the Valpolicella (the hills to the west for Amarone, 20 min by car from Verona) if you have a car.
