San Gimignano Day Trip: the Medieval Towers and Vernaccia Wine

The Tuscan tower village — visitable in half a day from Siena or Florence

7 min read · Spring · Summer · Autumn · Updated 21 May 2026

San Gimignano (UNESCO Heritage, 7,700 inhabitants) is the 'tower village' — in the Middle Ages noble families built towers as symbols of power and wealth, reaching 72. Fourteen have survived, forming Tuscany's most recognisable urban skyline and one of Italy's most photographed. Reached from Siena in 38km (SITA bus €3.50, 1h 10' with change at Poggibonsi) or from Florence in 1h 30' (bus with change, €9 return, or car hire). The village is pedestrianised and can be fully walked in 2h — enough to see the towers, the square, the Vernaccia and Dondoli's gelato (the world artisan gelato champion, Piazza della Cisterna 4). In July-August San Gimignano is very crowded in the central hours — visit early morning or late afternoon.

The Towers, the Piazza and the Museums

Piazza della Cisterna (with the 1273 medieval well) and Piazza del Duomo are the village heart — connected by Via San Giovanni, the main street with wine, ceramics and local product shops. Torre Grossa (54m, the tallest surviving, €9, included in the Museo Civico ticket) has the best panorama over the village and Tuscan hills. Museo Civico (€9, Palazzo del Popolo) has the Sala di Dante (where the poet was Florentine ambassador in 1300) and Lippo Memmi's Maestà (1317) — one of Tuscany's largest Gothic frescoes. The Duomo (Collegiata, €4) has Benozzo Gozzoli's frescoes (Old Testament cycle, 1466-1467) and Barna da Siena's cycle (New Testament, 14th century) — among medieval Tuscany's most complete pictorial cycles. The Cappella di Santa Fina (€4 extra, included in the Collegiata) is Ghirlandaio's masterpiece (1475) in the village.

Vernaccia and Dondoli's Gelato

Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG is Italy's oldest white wine — the first Italian denomination to obtain DOC in 1966, elevated to DOCG in 1993. Produced from the Vernaccia grape (indigenous to San Gimignano), it is a fresh, mineral white with a typical bitter finish note. Visitable cellars: Falchini, Montenidoli, Panizzi, Casale Falchini. Tastings in town centre enoteche (€8-15 for 3-4 glasses) are the simplest way to approach Vernaccia. Sergio Dondoli's gelato (Piazza della Cisterna 4) — the world artisan gelato champion, two-time Coppa del Mondo della Gelateria winner — is probably Tuscany's finest artisan gelato: the most famous flavours are Vernaccia (with the local wine), Crème Brûlée and Saffron Nutmeg.

Practical tips
