Hiking trail
The Sentiero dei Frati is a circular trail winding through the gentle slopes of Val Maira, near Dronero, carrying the quiet spirit of a land long connected to monastic life and contemplation. Walking this path means following in the footsteps of the friars who traversed these hills for centuries, moving through chestnut and beech forests where golden light filters through the canopy, crossing open meadows with views of the Occitan peaks, and pausing at spots that seem made for stillness and reflection. Along the way, small chapels, votive crosses and ancient dry-stone walls speak of an Alpine civilisation that transformed daily hardship into devotion. The flora is generous and varied during the milder seasons, while the local wildlife — roe deer, squirrels and a wealth of songbirds — brings the woodland quietly to life. Rated E on the CAI difficulty scale and taking around four and a half hours to complete, this loop is well suited to families with older children, dog owners and anyone seeking an honest, unhurried walk far from the tourist crowds. Spring and autumn paint the valley in unforgettable colours and scents, though the trail holds its charm across all three open seasons. Dogs are welcome throughout.
