The Olympic Valleys are the four valleys of upper western Piedmont that hosted the Turin 2006 Winter Olympics: Val di Susa (with Bardonecchia, Cesana, Claviere), Val Chisone (with Pragelato and Sestriere), Val Pellice and Val Germanasca. The Olympic legacy left high-quality infrastructure — ski lifts, FIS-certified pistes, hostels and accommodation — at prices significantly below comparable Swiss and French resorts. Sestriere (2,035m) is the highest and most internationally known resort: connected with the Vialattea ski area including Sauze d'Oulx, Cesana, Claviere and Montgenèvre in France (400km of pistes total). Bardonecchia (1,312m) is the most accessible resort from Turin: 80km, under an hour by car, or by direct train from Porta Susa.

Sestriere and the Vialattea Ski Area
Sestriere (TO, 2,035m) was Italy's first purpose-built ski resort, commissioned by Giovanni Agnelli Sr. in 1930. The Vialattea ski area connects Sestriere with Sauze d'Oulx, Jouvenceaux, Sportinia, Cesana, Claviere and Montgenèvre (France) — one skipass covers 400km of pistes in two countries. Daily Vialattea skipass: €48-55 (indicative — check current season). Sestriere hosted the 2006 Olympic men's downhill. Most panoramic pistes: Monte Sises (2,823m) with views over Monte Viso and the French Alps. In summer (June-September): Sestriere's Bike Park has downhill tracks with lifts open. The Val Chisone cycling route from Pinerolo to Sestriere (65km, 1,800m elevation) is one of the most complete cycling routes in the Western Alps.
Bardonecchia: Direct Train from Turin
Bardonecchia (TO, 1,312m, 80km from Turin) is the only Olympic Valley resort reachable by direct train from Turin Porta Susa (1h 15', change at Bussoleno, around €8; or direct Intercity 1h, €18). The ski area has 4 sectors: Jafferau, Campo Smith (excellent for beginners), Melezet and Fregiusia. Daily skipass: €37-42 — 20-30% cheaper than Sestriere. The Forte di Bramafan (1,350m) is an 1841 military fort with free guided visits Saturday mornings June-September. Claviere (1,760m, 30km from Sestriere) is the Italian access point to Montgenèvre in France — the border is crossed on skis without controls.
Pragelato, Val Troncea and the Occitan Culture
Pragelato (TO, 1,524m) hosted ski jumping and nordic combined at the 2006 Olympics. The Olympic jumping ramp is still visible from the provincial road. Val Troncea Nature Reserve (upstream from Pragelato, free entry, open year-round): 3,319 hectares of larch forests, high-altitude meadows, marmots, golden eagles, roe deer and wolves. The reserve circular trail (8km, 400m elevation) is the Val Chisone's most beautiful summer walk. The Occitan dialect is still spoken by a minority in Pragelato and lateral valleys — the Civic Museum of Alpine Costume and Traditions documents this culture.
Logistics, Prices and Seasons

Snow chains or winter tyres mandatory from October to April on all mountain roads — fine if stopped without them. Ski rental: €25-35/day complete set. Ski school: €35-45 individual 1h lesson, €20-25 group 2h lesson. Accommodation: rental apartments from €500/week for 4 people in Bardonecchia low season; Sestriere from €700/week. Practical tips
The Vialattea skipass covers 400km in two countries — always worth more than a single-resort pass for 3+ day stays
Bardonecchia is the only Olympic resort reachable by direct train from Turin — no car needed, and 20-30% cheaper than Sestriere
Val Troncea above Pragelato is the area's most beautiful summer hike — free, nearly empty, marmots and golden eagles almost guaranteed
Snow chains or winter tyres mandatory October-April on all mountain roads — this is a fine if stopped without them, not just a recommendation
